A Magnet status hospital is supposed to be a place where nursing there are low turnover of the nursing staff, good grievance resolution, nurses have high job satisfaction, and provides exemplary patient outcome. Nurses at Magnet hospitals should also have a say in patient care and be involved in data collection. Geisinger joins an elite group of 15 Pennsylvania hospitals — and only 294 hospitals in the United States — that have achieved Magnet status. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has designated Geisinger Medical Center as a Magnet hospital. And the benefits of Magnet status extend beyond patients and nurses to the hospitals themselves. Only the Commission on Magnet may approve any exception to this criterion. While 95% of existing Magnet hospitals apply for redesignation, about 5% do not. It was redesignated in 2008. Currently, only 7% of U.S. health care organizations out of over 6,300 U.S. hospitals have achieved Magnet recognition. Since then, only 258 of the nation’s 7,569 hospitals have received the honor, and only one in Maryland—The Johns Hopkins Hospital, which applied for and received the designation in 2003.
